  • Summer Lake

Cut and pasted from my wife's journal

We spent six nights at Ana Reservoir, just outside of Summer Lake, which is halfway between LaPine and Lakeview. The area is ringed by snow-covered mountains. We hiked, biked, and explored. We explored Paisley, Summer Lake, and Christmas Valley, hiked Fort Rock and Crack-in-the-Ground, and we biked all around the area between Ana Reservoir and Summer Lake. We discovered petroglyphs, snowy egrets, an old barn inhabited by a big owl, and saw so many animals, but very few people. We had all the hiking paths to ourselves. One of my favorite moments was early on Earth Day when we looked out the door of our camper and saw a cattle drive 40 feet from our trailer, complete with cowboys and lots and lots of cattle. Amazing! The last two days it was snowing, but we bundled up and explored some more. Tried but failed to get reservations at the "cowboy dinner tree" maybe next time. Yesterday it was snowing and blowing hard. We packed up and headed home. By the time we got to LaPine the snow miraculously disappeared! What a great camping trip!

Sounds like a great trip....however, we would have hung out and waited for Cowboy Dinner Tree, having been there before, SO worth another or several times!

You have steak to take home for a few more days dinner! We ate there years ago when camped at Thompson Reservoir, a place we have enjoyed several times, both in the organized campground and at the social security beach side. Dave says he thinks the price then was $25 so it was some time ago. We have also stayed and fished at Ana Reservoir campground--a good place to stop if you are on a trip.
