  • Joshua Tree National Park

We are heading to Ft. Huachuca/Sierra Vista AZ right after Christmas and like to visit national parks whenever possible. We are looking at a short stay at the Joshua Tree NP and would like some advise on campgrounds and things to do and see. Thanks for the assistance.

We took a tour of the Keys Ranch in Joshua Tree NP. You should be able to find info on it on the park website and you have to have reservations to do the tour. Quite interesting. We have camped a couple of time at Black Rock campground which is Ok but you don't have access to the park from it. Many of the campgrounds in the park don't have water. Black Rock is around 4000' elevation and can be cold.

Just south of Joshua Tree on the interstate is a George Patton museum. Well worth the stop if you are a history buff.

Forgot to add, there is free BLM camping just behind the museum. No nothing for services, but a good place to overnight.

Both times we visited Joshua Tree NP we drove and stopped at many of the parks trails and features going toward the south entrance. Both times it was in the spring and there was a lot in bloom. Probably not much if any in bloom over Christmas but possible in the lower elevations of the south end of the park. There are a number of hiking trails which may allow you to see much more.

Craigandsue, have you been to Fort Huachuca before? We had a great time in that area. Caverns and Bisbee are a must do. Tombstone not so much. We were also thought the RV park was great.

Arctic Mike, We met at the Navy Campground Pacific Beach a few months ago, we are the owners of a 25Y trailer. We have been to Apache Flats a number of times. This is the fourth year that we will stay on Ft. Huachuca for the allowed time of stay. I like to hunt quail and get lots of quail hunting days between January and mid-February. If you are still in the area, Chiricauha area is also very interesting. We also like Tubac, for its different art and unique items. Never stopped in Tombstone, and will likely keep that streak going...........

Thanks Glen for the additional information about Joshua Tree. I definitely believe that the weather will be better than what we have in Olympia, WA, even if there is no bloom. It will likely not be raining, 40 degrees, and foggy.
